Building Diversity and Inclusion

What We've Learned

  • For optimum results, diversity work requires steadfast commitment from all levels of an organization and realistic allotment of staff time and resources. And, it’s true that this commitment raises sensitive issues that must be resolved for an organization to grow stronger and more effective in fulfilling its mission.
  • All organizations approach diversity work in a slightly different way, and each effort takes a unique path. Yet, there is much to be learned from those organizations which have already broken new ground. We offer this information as a guide – and as an encouragement that organizational diversity is an achievable goal that is well worth the effort.
  • The organizations involved in the Diversity Initiative pointed to significant benefits. The process itself strengthened communication and understanding among and between staff and board members. Greater staff diversity led to a more stimulating work environment and to more effective delivery of programs and services.
  • There was a greater sense of accomplishment and satisfaction for individual staff and board members, and for the organization as a whole. Clarity about the organization’s vision and mission – and creating opportunities to include constituent voices in program planning and delivery – make organizations more relevant to and effective within their communities.
  • All those involved also recognize that achieving diversity is an ongoing process that will continue to both challenge and reward. We are grateful to all the organizations and consultants who have participated in the Diversity Initiative. Without their leadership, this information would not be possible. We hope the information provided on this website offers you both encouragement and practical advice.
