The Sports Philanthropy Project: A Case Study
Greg Johnson is the executive director of the Sports Philanthropy Project (SPP), a TSNE Fiscal Sponsorship client. SPP helps sports organizations and their foundations forge strategic partnerships to achieve healthy communities. This critical assistance builds comprehensive community programs that advance best practices in sports philanthropy.
A Fiscal Sponsor: When and Why?
Greg realized early in his tenure that if SPP was to be the success that both sports teams AND communities needed then SPP had to grow. That growth meant that the unincorporated group needed more comprehensive, higher-level support in fiscal, accounting and human resource services. At the recommendation from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Greg and SPP explored a partnership with TSNE, among a host of options. Greg met with the staff at TSNE and in June 2003, SPP selected Third Sector because our services provided just what they needed to better manage and develop their project. They benefited from our support in the areas of accounting, budgeting, proposal preparation, human relations and program assistance.
Value-Added Service at an Affordable Cost
Greg tells all who ask him that he and the staff of SPP value TSNE’s fiscal sponsorship services and consider the service for fee structure to be “quite a bargain.” Before partnering with TSNE, Greg shouldered many of the operational responsibilities of the organization, including accounting and administration. Third Sector's support allowed him and other staff to put more of its resources and staff energy into focusing on its mission to help organizations, teams, leagues, individual athletes, and foundation staff address critical issues in their own backyards or across the country.
According to Greg, SPP had experienced firsthand what it is to operate without comprehensive fiscal and administrative services. In describing the partnership between SPP and Third Sector New England, he says, “The people at TSNE have been a joy to work with.”
