Organizational Description

For over a decade, the Building Movement Project (BMP), a fiscally sponsored project of TSNE MissionWorks, has been advancing the potential for nonprofit organizations to have an impact on building movements for progressive social change. We learn by listening to groups and leaders about what it takes for organizations to align their social justice principles with their operating practices. Our research and practical resources help organizations innovate to meet the needs of the communities they serve and face the challenges of the external environment. BMP concentrates on the following three main areas to accomplish our goals and advance social change:

  • Leadership: Analyzing how organizations can do their best work, encourage diverse leaders at every level, and promote the most effective and inclusive practices;
  • Service and Social Change: Developing the capacity of organizations to engage constituents in changing the systems that impact them;
  • Movement Building: Acknowledging and building on the distinct role of nonprofit organizations in advancing movements for social change.

Job Summary

We are seeking a full-time researcher to join our small staff team and work closely with and report to BMP’s Co-Directors. The Senior Research Associate will work on our national projects focused on leadership including our Race to Lead reports, service and social change (Tools to Engage), and movement building, as well as our place-based projects in Detroit and New Mexico.  The Building Movement Project is based in New York City.

Essential Job Functions

Responsibilities of the Senior Research Associate will include:

  • Lead and/or support multiple research projects;
  • Analyze qualitative and quantitative data and prepare reports and other deliverables;
  • Summarize data and interpret and make meaning of findings;
  • Produce graphs, charts and other forms of data visualization;
  • Write reports, memos, articles and blogs based on findings; Conduct research of related materials as appropriate to help support documentation;
  • Collaborate on the development of surveys, interview protocols, and other data collection tools;
  • Present findings in meetings, panels, social media, and other venues;
  • Contribute thought leadership and strategic insights to the development of future projects;
  • Conduct assessments of current and past projects to inform future work.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will meet the following criteria:

  • Master’s Degree and at least four years of relevant work experience in a related field (experience may be substituted for additional education);
  • Strong quantitative analytical  skills including data cleaning, analysis, visualization of findings and proven facility with data analysis software such as SPSS, Stata, R, etc.
  • Strong qualitative research skills including conducting interviews, facilitating focus groups, and experience analyzing / coding qualitative data (familiarity with qualitative data software programs is a plus);
  • Familiarity with SurveyGizmo, SurveyMonkey, and/or other online survey platforms (experience with social network analysis – i.e. UCINET – is a plus);
  • Ability to produce high-quality written products for a variety of audiences;
  • Strong presentation and facilitation skills;
  • A track record of managing multiple projects concurrently and prioritizing work effectively; Strong project assessment skills;
  • Commitment to and experience working with social change/justice organizations; able to build authentic relationships with diverse stakeholders including valuing the insights from people’s lived experience;
  • Be self-motivated and comfortable working independently and be collaborative, enjoying working on a small team.

The hiring range is $70,000 to $85,000, with comprehensive benefits.
