Program Format

The Diversity & Inclusion Initiative has identified 2 phases to support non-profit organizations embarking upon diversity and inclusion work. The planning phase will allow organizations to organize their approach to the work by identifying obvious challenges and creating an assessment tool to assist in prioritizing goals and supporting activities.

Planning Grants

Planning grants support a 6-month process during which time an organization will:

  1. Refine its diversity goals
  2. Establish or reconstitute a diversity committee or task force
  3. Engage a consultant and develop an assessment tool

Successful completion of these activities is required before a nonprofit is eligible to apply for an implementation grant.

At this time, $150,000 is available for distribution and planning grant awards will range up to $15,000. Grants must be allocated to the design of an organizational assessment developed by a cross-section of staff and board that reflects efforts the organization will implement to become more diverse and inclusive. Proposals that include constituent participation will receive particular attention. Planning grants are for a 6-month period March 1, 2010, to August 30, 2010. Individual grant requests should not exceed $15,000.

Implementation Grants

Organizations with successful completion of planning activities may submit a proposal for an implementation grant which will support assessment data gathering activities and the development of an organizational plan with specific goals, objectives and supporting activities. Preference will be given to those applications that demonstrate how diversity and inclusion are integrated into the organizational strategic vision. The application process for implementation grants begins on September 15, 2010, with a completion deadline of October 1, 2010.

  1. On September 15, 2010, organizations will submit planning grant reports with their assessment tools.
  2. By October 1, 2010, organizations will complete the application process by submitting an implementation proposal.
