A fiscally sponsored program of Third Sector New England (TSNE), MissionSAFE is a 12-year-old, highly impactful program working with young people in the most highly at-risk situations. The small but great staff is committed to the personal and skills growth of young people from Boston’s violence- and poverty-affected neighborhoods.
Job Summary
The Charlestown coordinator is responsible for understanding and implementing the unique MissionSAFE culture of youth development, trauma and resilience theory and the variety of expansive, textured, appropriate programming to help youth and their families build skills and confidence and choices for the future. The successful candidate will be a seasoned and ambitious professional who loves a challenge and is able to supervise staff, schedule, develop and maintain programming, oversee the space and develop relationships with MissionSAFE partners and potential resources.
This position requires “soup to nuts” energy and experience since Charlestown currently has only two part-time youth workers. The role of the coordinator will be to build up the program according to MissionSAFE core values, work with over 30 youth daily, increase MissionSAFE Charlestown’s visibility in the community, and make sure the program is attractive to youth even as it delivers the core content youth need to grow and succeed. Essential Job Functions
- Oversee all aspects of the Charlestown site, including programming, security, cleanliness and functionality of the facility; ensure that all supervision, planning and outreach is done in a way that models MissionSAFE’s core values
- Supervise all Charlestown staff, interns and volunteers; supervision includes training, overseeing all programming, assuring timely submission of reports, evaluation
- Oversee all administrative functions such as scheduling, training, timesheets for pay periods, youth grants, fund requisitions and receipts, purchase of supplies and snacks; ensure all participants have appropriate permission forms on file; ensure all paperwork is done in an appropriate and timely manner
- Research and deliver appropriate resources regarding emotional and therapeutic needs for youth, including life skills, leadership and communication, conflict resolution, job readiness, workshops, community service and civic engagement, career and college visits, and other horizon-broadening activities
- Be responsible for the intake and confidential maintenance of all youth, volunteer and staff information and files, and assure that staff and participants are compliant with all requirements and policies
- Get to know all youth in the program and oversee ongoing recruitment of highly at-risk youth who can benefit from being a part of MissionSAFE; foster racial, ethnic and gender diversity and a culture of inclusion; establish Individual Action Plans for all participants
- Build and oversee summer intern and arts programming; process related payroll paperwork and administer summer lunch program
- Establish and maintain external partnerships within and outside of Charlestown that advance MissionSAFE’s mission; build and maintain internal partnerships which help to maintain a sense of community among all MissionSAFE locations
- Establish and maintain relationships with corporate and community leaders, attend meetings as needed
- In conjunction with the ED, determine program offerings in Charlestown and when appropriate, coordinate with staff and youth from the Roxbury location
- Constantly, with staff and participants, evaluate effectiveness of programming; ensure successful tracking of attendance, participation, progress and outcomes
- Recruit, train and supervise interns
Qualifications
- At least three years of comparable experience and a successful track-record supervising staff required; Master’s degree in relevant field preferred, MSW a plus
- Demonstrated understanding of adolescent development, trauma and resiliency and experience working successfully with urban, at-risk adolescents and young adults
- Knowledge of substance abuse issues and counseling is preferred
- Good interpersonal skills, ability to motivate staff, youth, interns and volunteers
- Experience planning and implementing a broad range of programming
- Experience supervising and managing interns and volunteers
- Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to problem-solve and set priorities
- Demonstrated ability in recordkeeping, and ability to pay close and accurate attention to details
