Station1 is building a foundation for the university of the future ― a scalable model of higher education based on inclusion and equity, learning through frontier project-based inquiry and research, and the integration of science and technology with humanistic studies for societal impact. Station1:
- Creates and implements transformative programs that educate a diverse range of students, in particular those who have lacked opportunity in their lives and education, which foster meaningful careers and lives in our changing world;
- Carries out specialized higher education projects, for example in the areas of postsecondary finance, blended learning, and computer-assisted curriculum design, and;
- Collaborates with partners across academia, industry, and the public sector to catalyze and foster access and advancement of science and technology-focused higher education.
The Teaching Assistant will work as members of a transdisciplinary team in providing educational and professional development services to undergraduate students in a private inclusive classroom setting in the beautiful and historic Riverwalk Mills of Lawrence, MA. This is a 20 hour a week position that runs from June 8th to August 15th, salary commensurate with experience. The number of office hours required per week will be determined by your supervisor, but it is usually at least 2 hours per week in the evening. Salary is commensurate with experience.
Essential Job Functions
- Attendance at Monday (full day 9am -5pm) and Wednesday evening lectures are required;
- Evaluate student performance on project development, assigned literature reviews, and other weekly assignments;
- Maintain accurate grade records;
- Maintain accurate attendance and participation records;
- Lead review of concepts, and materials, problem-solving sessions, discussions of primary literature etc.;
- Actively monitor student activities;
- Facilitate students arriving at the answers to their questions themselves instead of giving them the answers directly;
- Facilitate open and honest dialogue with students with thoughtful consideration of bias influence, making best efforts to mitigate bias in teaching and grading, and contribute to establishment of inclusive and equitable learning ecosystem;
- Communicate with Station1 instructors and Program Administrators to report on student performance, identify areas for additional review, identify students in need of additional assistance and mentorship;
- Develop meaningful relationships with Summer@Station1 Fellows.
- Bachelor's Degree minimum requirement, STEM-related field preferred.
- Prior experience working with college students in learning activities and classroom settings, one-on-one tutoring, and small group interactions;
- Enthusiastic to engage in transdisciplinary curriculum focused on the intersection of history, social studies of science and technology, inquiry and scientific research, equity, social innovation, and professional development;
- Strong organizational skills, excellent with details and follow-up;
- Strategic relationship-builder with outstanding interpersonal communication skills;
- Collaborative team player;
- Creative and self-directed individual;
- Residency in eastern Massachusetts;
- Available for the full 10 week program, June 8th-August 15th including trainings in May in preparation for the program launch;
- Available for 20 hours per week, including regular weekly meetings;
- Full commitment to Monday coursework (9am-5pm) and Wednesday evenings (5pm-9pm) in addition to 2 hours of evening office hours one day per week;
