Boston, August 30, 2022 — TSNE has received a $125,000 one-year project grant from The Boston Foundation to fund an updated edition of Valuing Our Nonprofit Workforce, a regional nonprofit compensation survey, and two connected pieces of research: Leadership New England and Opportunity in Change. Taken together, this grant will make possible critical research on current nonprofit compensation and benefits, staffing shortage challenges, and the support and development that leaders need in the present employment climate. With an eye towards social justice movements and COVID-19, the reports will also focus on the impact these and other events have had on outcomes for leaders of color.
The free Valuing Our Nonprofit Workforce survey is a high-demand resource for nonprofit organizations and workers. The updated report will provide an accurate and comprehensive understanding of how the pandemic and staffing shortages have impacted nonprofit salaries and benefits across the region. First published in 2010, each version of the Valuing Our Nonprofit Workforce survey has provided nonprofit leaders with the information they need to make equitable and consistent compensation decisions and practices. The survey focuses on small to mid-sized organizations and highlights common nonprofit positions that are hard to find in broader compensation studies. The report, in-depth analyses, and searchable salary database have been accessed over a quarter of a million times, and are used by executive directors, board members, human resources staff, and consultants in establishing pay practices across entire organizations, planning for leadership transitions, and critical research during strategic planning. Individual workers have also used this free resource to learn about current rates in the region.

Funds for this grant come from the Boston Foundation’s Permanent Fund for Boston, an endowed pool of funds built over more than a century by generous contributors who want to help the Greater Boston community thrive. Each year, the Boston Foundation distributes more than $15 million in discretionary grants and other resources from the Fund, which are largely awarded through a competitive process open to nonprofits serving the Foundation’s catchment area, stewarded by the Foundation’s Program Department staff and approved by the Foundation’s Board of Directors.
